Description

Scrolls guard the outside; two faces wait within.

This richly decorated rectangular cigarette case carries curling foliage around a central crowned crest on one exterior face. The opposite face surrounds a blank circular cartouche with similarly elaborate ornament. Repeated scored borders and textured grounds give the decoration depth, alternating with smoother reflective surfaces.

Opening the case reveals two closely posed figures engraved across one compartment, with a stylised long-eared animal head framed by scrollwork in the other. These intimate and imaginative subjects lend the object character without revealing the identities of its maker or the people depicted.

Vaen’kai Vault attributes the case to WWII-era trench art in the general POW/soldier-made tradition. This is a seller attribution, not verified authorship or individual wartime provenance. No named soldier, prisoner, camp, regiment, or place of manufacture is established. The crest’s precise affiliation and the portrait subjects remain unidentified.

The Particulars

  • Type: Hinged cigarette case
  • Attribution: WWII-era trench art, generally attributed by the seller to the POW/soldier-made tradition
  • Material: Silver-coloured metal; composition unconfirmed
  • Exterior: Crowned crest, foliate scrollwork, and blank circular cartouche
  • Interior: Engraved pair of figures and stylised animal-head motif
  • Borders: Repeated scored decoration with textured backgrounds
  • Retaining bands: None visible in the supplied interior photographs
  • Maker, precise date, origin, and individual service history: Unidentified

The photographs show fine and broader scratches, scuffing, small dark marks, and uneven surface colour across the exterior and interior. Wear is visible around the rims and fittings. The interior edge fittings remain visible, but no retaining bands are shown; no claim is made about their original configuration. Fastening strength, dimensions, and capacity have not been established. Neither precious-metal content nor manufacture from battlefield scrap is claimed. Please study the detailed photographs for the surviving ornament and surface wear.

A layered pocket relic for a keeper drawn to intricate decoration and the unanswered stories held within ordinary objects. Photographic props are not included. Carefully nestled in its treasure coffin, a vault relic from Vaen’kai Vault.
