Description

Not carved. Sprigged. The distinction matters.

A shell cameo is carved: one person, one tool, one shell, working by hand. A Wedgwood jasperware cameo is something else entirely. The white relief figure was applied to the ceramic ground as a separate sprig, a moulded white stoneware motif pressed onto the still-soft body before firing, a technique developed and perfected by Josiah Wedgwood in the 1770s and refined by his firm across the following two centuries. The result is a different kind of object: reproducible in principle, but still made by hand at every stage, still requiring skill and judgement, and still capable of extraordinary delicacy.

This brooch demonstrates that delicacy well. The ground is Wedgwood's rosso antico, a warm terracotta-rose that the firm used from the earliest days of the jasperware range, a rarer colour than the famous blue and a more dramatic one. Against it, the white sprigged figure: a classical dancing muse or goddess in motion, robes flowing, arms extended, caught mid-step in the neoclassical tradition that Wedgwood made his own. The modelling is crisp and well-defined throughout, the figure cleanly separated from the ground, the drapery articulated with genuine care.

The reverse bears the impressed mark: WEDGWOOD / MADE IN ENGLAND, confirming British production. The tablet is set in a silver-toned beaded frame with a pin back.

The condition is excellent. The white sprigged relief is intact with no chips, the rosso antico ground is clean, and the frame is secure. On Wedgwood jasperware, where the sprigged relief is the most vulnerable element, an unchipped example is the standard to aim for and this one meets it.
