Description

Door-to-door. Freeport, Illinois. A compact you had to know someone to buy.

La Jaynees was a cosmetics sub-brand of the W.T. Rawleigh Company of Freeport, Illinois: a direct-sales operation that sent representatives door to door across mid-century America, selling household products, remedies, and personal care lines to customers who bought by relationship rather than by shop. La Jaynees compacts were part of that world. You did not find them on a counter. Someone brought this to your door.

The compact is circular, large, and vivid: a flame vermillion red lacquered enamel exterior carrying bold parallel vertical ribbing across the entire face, the ribs deep and evenly spaced in a strong Art Deco linear pattern. Around the circumference runs a continuous raised foliate border, small botanical motifs repeating in a band at the rim. The La Jaynees name is embossed in italic serif script within a raised cartouche tablet at centre, flanked by two diagonal bars. The red enamel shows wear at the raised edges of the ribs, the gold-tone substrate visible at the high points across the face, noted and shown in the photos.

The interior is lined in deep cerise fabric and holds the original accessories: a warm gold-tone pressed metal sifter disc carrying an all-over fish-scale guilloche pattern of notable density and quality, and the original powder puff, a blush pink woven fabric disc with a crimped white chiffon frill border stitched in cerise running stitch and a small red ribbon pull tab. The inner rim carries the stamp: Rawleigh's / FREEPORT, ILL. The double-barrel hinge is clean and tight.
