Description

Someone spent a long time on this hair. You can see every decision they made.

The standard Victorian shell cameo portrait presents a classical maiden in profile with swept or loosely dressed hair, a pleasing and well-practised composition that the carvers of Torre del Greco could produce with their eyes closed. This is not that. The carver of this brooch chose the more demanding subject: a figure whose hair is composed entirely of individually carved tight ringlets, each one a discrete coiled curl, cascading from the crown down the back of the head in a dense, elaborately worked mass. The technique requires patience and precision in equal measure. Each ringlet must be undercut from the shell, rounded, and separated from its neighbours without breaking the finer detail of the curl above it. The number of individual elements in this hair treatment runs to dozens. Every one of them is intact.

The face below that hair is beautifully executed: fine-featured, with a gentle downward tilt that gives the figure a contemplative quality unusual in the standard portrait cameo tradition. The drapery at the shoulder is full and flowing, the composition elegant and unhurried. The shell ground is warm honey-amber carnelian conch, the white relief layer carved with genuine depth and confidence throughout.

The frame is pierced silver, a lacy openwork border of interlocking scroll and loop motifs that complements the delicacy of the carving without competing with it. A period pin back with attached safety chain and safety catch. Silver-stamped at the bail. The brooch is a large oval, a statement piece sized for the centre of a bodice or the lapel of a coat rather than a day brooch worn casually.

The condition is exceptional. The ringlet carving is crisp and fully intact throughout, every curl distinct and undamaged. The face is clean, the drapery sharp, the shell surface retaining its natural warmth. On a cameo of this complexity, this condition is not something to take for granted.
