Description

Gold all over, with a rose at the centre.

A deeply embossed rose in full bloom occupies the centre of this gold-tone powder compact lid, its petals, buds and leaves raised in high relief against an all-over fine crosshatch engine-turned ground. The contrast between the textured background and the smooth sculptural rose gives the lid its depth and its quiet drama. There is no enamel, no colour inlay: the entire surface is gold-tone, warm and cohesive, letting the embossing do all the work.

Made in Birmingham by Laughter Sons Ltd of Warwick Road, a British vanity maker whose compacts are increasingly sought by collectors of mid-century vanity pieces. The label to the interior confirms the maker and country of manufacture.

Comes complete with its original box and slip, new puff and new sifter. Some handling wear is present to the exterior, consistent with age and light use, but the interior is clean and the mechanism functions as it should.
