Antique 800 Silver Shell Cameo Brooch & Pendant, Classical Draped Figure, Marcasite Border, c.1 Inch
Description
Recovered from the most storied corner of the archive, this antique 800 silver shell cameo is a breathtaking example of the carver's art at its most accomplished — a miniature sculpture in relief that has survived the decades in extraordinary condition.
The oval shell cameo depicts a classical female figure in flowing draped robes, her hair crowned with flowers, her form rendered with a delicacy and precision that speaks to the hand of a skilled Italian or Continental carver. The warm honey-apricot ground of the shell sets off the white relief carving with a luminous contrast that no synthetic material can replicate. The 800 silver frame is set with marcasite accents around its border, adding a dark, glittering edge to the composition. The reverse features a double-function fitting — both a brooch pin and a pendant bail — allowing the piece to be worn pinned to a lapel or collar, or suspended from a chain as a pendant. Hallmarked 800 on the reverse. Approximately 1 inch in height. Offered in excellent antique condition.
A museum-quality wearable artifact for the serious collector of antique jewellery and Continental curiosities. Part of the Shadow and Silver Vault collection.
