Antique Shell Cameo Brooch, 800 Silver Frame, Gold Vermeil Traces, Classical Female Portrait, Excellent
Description
She has been looking in the same direction for over a century, and she has not grown tired of the view.
The carving on this cameo is the kind that stops you. A classical female portrait in high relief, her hair swept back in loose, flowing waves with a fine braided detail at the crown, her profile clean and composed against a warm carnelian-orange shell ground. The carving is deep and confident, the kind of work that takes time and a steady hand, and it shows: the drapery at her shoulder falls in soft, layered folds that catch the light differently depending on the angle.
The frame is 800 silver, oval, with a fine rope-twist border that sits neatly around the shell. The reverse shows a roller catch and C-pin clasp, the hallmark of antique construction. Look closely at the frame and you will find traces of gold vermeil still clinging to the surface in warmer patches, evidence of an original gilded finish that has worn beautifully and honestly over time. It does not diminish the piece. It dates it.
