Antique Victorian Vulcanite Carved Lily of the Valley Brooch, c.1880, Mourning Jewellery, Excellent

Recovered from the deepest corner of the mourning archive, this antique Victorian vulcanite brooch is a breathtaking example of the carver's art at its most botanically precise and emotionally resonant.

Carved from a single piece of vulcanite in deep, lustrous black, the oval brooch depicts a spray of lily of the valley in high relief, its characteristic drooping bell flowers and curved leaves rendered with extraordinary naturalistic detail. Lily of the valley carried deep symbolic weight in the Victorian mourning tradition, representing the return of happiness and the purity of the departed, making this brooch as meaningful as it is beautiful. The reverse shows the characteristic rough vulcanite surface and a period-correct gold-tone C-catch pin fitting. Dating to approximately 1880, this piece sits at the height of the Victorian mourning jewellery tradition. Offered in excellent antique condition.
