Description

A tiny keeper with a dark gleaming shell, four determined feet, and nowhere in particular to hurry.

This turtle-shaped vesta case turns a practical pocket object into a miniature creature. Its domed celluloid shell is patterned with raised segments, appearing almost black in shadow and revealing deep reddish-brown tones where the light passes through. A silver-plated surround forms the shell’s border, with a textured head, four little feet, and a curled tail completing the figure.

The underside carries closely spaced, rippling ridges, while a hinged opening reveals the dark cavity beneath the shell. Identified as an antique in the Vault’s original listing, this example is offered without a precise date, maker, or country of origin. The celluloid and silver-plated identification comes from the seller; the shell is not offered as genuine tortoiseshell.

The Particulars

  • Type: Figural turtle vesta case / match safe
  • Shell: Celluloid, as identified by the seller
  • Mount: Silver-plated metal, as identified by the seller; underlying metal unconfirmed
  • Colour: Dark reddish-brown shell with silver-coloured fittings
  • Details: Segmented domed shell, textured head and feet, curled tail
  • Reverse: Closely ridged surface
  • Opening: Hinged, shown partly open in the photographs
  • Maker, origin, and exact date: Unidentified
  • Condition: Visible surface and plating wear described below

The shell shows fine scratches, scuffs, and small pale surface marks. The metal has darkened recesses, rubbing, and uneven plating, with warmer-coloured areas showing around the border, hinge, and fittings. The opening is photographed partly ajar; closure tension and the functionality of the ridged surface have not been tested. Interior condition is only partly visible. Please study the close-ups for these traces of age.

Offered as a collectible display piece rather than for lighting matches. Keep away from flame and heat.

A quietly eccentric companion for a cabinet of curiosities, small enough to sit among your treasures and sufficiently charming to steal the scene. Carefully nestled in its treasure coffin, a vault relic from Vaen’kai Vault.
