Antique Silver Double-Compartment Repousse Trinket Box, Fruit & Vine Panels, Botanical Sides, Excellent
Description
Before the age of blister packs and plastic bottles, the carrying of medicine was itself an act of elegance. Continental silversmiths crafted pill and trinket boxes as objects worthy of a pocket or a reticule, small enough to be discreet, beautiful enough to be noticed.
This antique silver double-compartment box is a particularly fine example of the form. The hinged lid opens in two separate panels, each framed in a raised border and decorated in high-relief repousse: the left panel shows a lush cluster of grapes with vine leaves, the right a composition of pears and mixed fruit, both rendered with a naturalistic abundance that speaks to the Continental silversmithing tradition at its most exuberant. The sides of the box are covered in dense repousse floral and botanical scrollwork, leaving no surface unadorned. The interior of each compartment carries additional embossed floral detailing, a level of craftsmanship that extends even to the parts rarely seen. A satisfying weight, a well-fitted double hinge, and a surface that has gathered the gentle shadows of age. Offered in excellent vintage condition.
A museum-quality collectible artifact for the serious appreciator of antique silver and Continental vanity objects. Part of the Vanity Table Treasures collection.
