Vintage Italian Sterling Silver Flat Curb Link Bracelet, Heavy Cuban Chain, 5mm Wide, 8 Inch Length, Oxidised Patina, Stamped 925 Italy, Maker's Mark RGT, c.1980s-1990s
Description
Heavy silver. Flat links. Eight inches of Italian chain.
The flat curb link, sometimes called the Cuban link, is one of the oldest and most enduring chain constructions in silversmithing. The links are set at a diagonal and ground flat on the face so the bracelet lies completely flat against the wrist, the interlocking structure visible from above as a continuous pattern of angled rectangular forms. At 5mm wide and 8 inches long this bracelet sits at the substantial end of the wearable spectrum: wide enough to have genuine presence, heavy enough to feel like silver rather than plate, long enough to fit a full range of wrists without feeling pinched.
The silver has developed a natural oxidised patina in the recesses between the links, the darker tones in the valleys contrasting with the brighter raised faces of each link. This is the character that comes from age and wear rather than polishing, and it is exactly what distinguishes a piece with history from a new piece attempting the same aesthetic. A polish would remove it. It should not be polished.
The bracelet is stamped 925 Italy on the clasp, with the maker's mark RGT. Italian sterling silver chain production, centred on the workshops of Vicenza and Arezzo, represented the benchmark for chain quality throughout the latter half of the twentieth century. The 925 Italy stamp on a flat curb bracelet of this weight and construction is a reliable indicator of that tradition.
