Description

Two British houses. The Three Graces. Never opened.

The Stratton and Wedgwood collaboration compacts are among the most sought-after vanity pieces of the mid-20th century: a Stratton powder compact mechanism and body, Made in England, carrying a genuine Wedgwood Jasperware disc set into the lid face. Two British heritage manufacturers, each at the top of their respective craft, producing a single object that belonged on a dressing table and, decades later, belongs in a vault.

This is the rare version. The standard Stratton x Wedgwood compact appears in the familiar Portland blue ground with white classical relief. This one is the blue-on-blue colourway: a deep slate-blue Jasperware ground carrying the relief figures in pale sky-blue bisque, the same tone family as the ground but raised in three dimensions against it. And the subject is the Three Graces: Aglaea, Euphrosyne, and Thalia, the most iconic motif in the entire Wedgwood canon, the three classical figures in flowing drapery, arms linked and extended, caught mid-movement in the Neoclassical pose that Wedgwood has reproduced across pottery, jewellery, and decorative objects for more than two centuries. In the blue-on-blue colourway, on a vanity compact, brand new: this is not a common find.

The compact body is silver-tone throughout, a departure from the more common gold-tone hardware variant. The reverse carries Stratton's fine parallel-line engine-turning with a repeating arrow chevron pattern and the Stratton England cartouche plate set centrally. The hinge spine carries the Wedgwood catalogue number stamp and the Josiah Wedgwood and Sons Ltd maker's label, intact and fully legible, confirming the documented collaboration provenance of this piece.

Everything that left the counter with it is still here: the original white fabric slip with Stratton Made in England in gold foil script; the original powder puff; the original sifter; the original outer case. This is the complete set, untouched.
