Vintage Stratton Square Powder Compact, Turquoise Enamel with West Highland White Terrier Westie Motif, Ribbed Amber-Gold Body, Original Box and Full Accessories, Made in England
Description
Turquoise. A Westie in full stride. Original box. Stratton at their most charming.
Stratton produced a range of novelty and figural compacts carrying painted animal motifs across the mid-century period, and the dog series in particular has become a dedicated collector category. This one is the Westie: a West Highland White Terrier depicted mid-stride on a vivid turquoise enamel ground, tail up, head slightly turned, the characteristic round muzzle and fluffy double coat rendered in warm sepia-brown and white tones. Against the bright turquoise, the warm brown of the painting reads with real presence. This is not a generic terrier. The breed is unmistakable, and Westie people will know it immediately.
The form is the Stratton square: the characteristic squared body with the angled corner cut-away at the clasp side, the entire exterior carrying fine parallel vertical ribbing in a warm amber-gold finish. The contrast between the ribbed gold body and the flat vivid turquoise lid face is striking. The triple-barrel hinge is clean and tight. The interior holds the full Stratton accessories: the branded cream puff with the Stratton cursive script embossed in gold to the face, and beneath it the fine mesh gauze sifter over the blush-pink lined base. The full-width angled mirror in the lid is bright and unspotted. The original Stratton box is present.
Two exterior condition points to note, both visible in the close-up photos: a small dent to the gold-tone rim at the angled clasp corner, where the rim has been compressed slightly inward; and two tiny rust-coloured flecks on the turquoise enamel surface near the hinge. The interior is new and unused throughout.
