Antique Sterling Silver Garnet Link Bracelet, Deep Blood-Red Oval Garnets, Open Rope-Wire Scroll Links, 925 Silver, Victorian Arts and Crafts, c.1880s-1900s
Description
The red is the first thing you see. The wirework is what keeps you looking.
Garnets have been set in silver for centuries, the deep blood-red of the stone against white metal being one of those combinations that does not date and does not tire. This bracelet understands that. The stones are oval-cut natural garnets, faceted with clean lines, their colour a rich and saturated wine-red with real depth and transparency, the kind of garnet colour that shifts between red and burgundy depending on the light. Each one is claw-set in an oval collet, secure and well-fitted.
What distinguishes this bracelet from the standard garnet link is the construction of the links themselves. Between each stone, an open oval frame of twisted rope-wire, two curving wire arms with a rope-twist texture finish forming a fluid, elongated loop. The effect is organic and handmade, closer in sensibility to Arts and Crafts silversmithing than to the stamped link bracelets of the same period. The vine-like quality of the wirework gives the whole piece a movement and lightness that a heavier construction would not have.
Sterling silver throughout, stamped 925.
