Vintage Regent of London Powder Compact, Bone China Floral Lid with Painted Pink Rose, Guilloche Hobnail Reverse, Gold-Tone, Made in England, Original Sifter and Slip
Description
A garden rose in full bloom. Guilloche on the reverse that you cannot stop looking at.
Regent of London produced a range of compacts carrying hand-painted bone china lid inserts, a design approach that places them firmly in the tradition of English decorative ceramic ware translated into vanity objects. This one carries a large circular bone china disc set into the gold-tone lid: an ivory ground with a full-blown cerise and blush pink rose at centre, the petals painted in generous lush strokes from pale blush at the outer edges to deep magenta at the heart, flanked by warm amber-gold leaves and softer lilac-grey shadow foliage behind. It is painterly, romantic, and unashamedly English. The disc sits in a dark gunmetal bezel ring within the bright gold-tone rim, the contrast border making the white china and the vivid rose read sharply against the metal body.
Turn it over and the reverse demands its own attention. Regent of London applied a guilloche engine-turning of exceptional density to the base: a deep radiating hobnail or pyramid-stud pattern, each raised point faceted, emanating from a small concentric bullseye at dead centre and covering the entire surface to the rim. Three bold parallel vertical channels cut through the engine-turned ground, dividing the face into panels with fine wavy-line engine-turning in the sections between. The push-piece clasp tab is broad, flat, and clean. The double-barrel hinge is tight. REGENT OF LONDON / MADE IN ENGLAND is stamped in raised capitals around the inner mirror rim.
The compact is new and barely handled. The full-width mirror has light surface dust from storage, no chips or spots. The sifter is intact in the base section. The original slip is present.
