Description

Two coins. One sphere. Surprisingly heavy.

Two British half crown coins from 1948 have been pressed into matching domed hemispheres, filled solid, and joined at the equator to form this perfectly spherical pendant. The filling gives it a weight that catches people off guard: this is not a hollow coin locket but a dense, substantial orb that sits with real gravity in the hand. The milled reeded edge of the half crown coins runs as a decorative seam band around the equator of the sphere, the coin's own detail becoming the join line, as though the pendant was always meant to be this shape.

Both faces of the sphere carry the full relief of the original half crowns. One hemisphere shows the reverse: the quartered Royal Arms shield with the Irish harp, Scottish lion, and English lions in their quadrants, HALF CROWN in bold lettering, dated 1948. The other hemisphere carries the obverse: the portrait of George VI, the legend GEORGIVS running around the curve of the sphere. The natural dark patina has settled into the relief of the coin designs, giving both faces excellent depth and legibility.

The bail is gold-tone metal, a simple loop soldered to the seam at the crown of the sphere, connecting to a fine sterling silver cable chain. An unusual, heavy, genuinely singular piece of British artisan coin jewellery.

Please note: British half crowns dated 1948 are cupronickel, not silver. British coinage transitioned from silver to cupronickel in 1947. The pendant itself has no silver content despite its appearance. The chain is sterling silver.
