Vintage 18 Carat Solid Gold Link Bracelet, Engine-Turned Brick Pattern Links, Polished Caps, Fold-Over Ladder Clasp, 5mm Wide, 8 Inch, 12g, Stamped 18K 750, Mid-Century Continental, c.1950s-1960s
Description
Twelve grams of solid 18 carat gold. The engine turning took longer than the gold.
There is a weight to solid 18 carat gold that no other material replicates. Twelve grams of it, formed into articulated links and worn on the wrist, has a presence that registers before you have consciously noticed the bracelet at all. This piece earns that weight twice over: the gold is there, and the craftsmanship is there with it.
Each link is a broad rectangular bar with a two-part surface. The upper face is a smooth, slightly convex polished cap that catches light cleanly. The lower visible portion of each link carries a precision engine-turned surface: rows of small engraved rectangles in a repeating brick or grid matrix, each row offset from the next, the lines cut with mechanical precision into the gold face. Engine turning at this scale and consistency requires a specialised rose engine lathe and a degree of skill and patience that situates this firmly in Continental European workshop production of the mid-twentieth century. The combination of polished and engine-turned surfaces within a single link creates a two-texture effect that shifts as the bracelet moves on the wrist.
The links articulate via small connecting bars at the sides, giving the bracelet the fluid movement of a fine watch strap rather than the looser drape of a conventional chain. The clasp is an adjustable fold-over ladder clasp, a watchmaker's closure, practical and precise. The bracelet is stamped 18K and 750 on the interior of a link, confirming 75% pure gold content throughout.
