Charles Horner Sterling Silver Hinged Bangle, Chester 1955 with Coronation Mark, Full Bright-Cut Engraved Foliate Decoration, Safety Chain Intact
Description
Chester. 1955. Charles Horner. The engraving is as cut. The safety chain is still there.
A Charles Horner sterling silver hinged bangle, hallmarked Chester 1955 with coronation commemorative mark: a D-section rigid oval bangle with the full outer face decorated in bright-cut engraved foliate scrolls, leafwork, and floral sprays running continuously around the circumference. The bright-cut technique — the tool cutting at an angle to leave a faceted channel that catches light at variance with the surrounding polished metal — gives the engraving its characteristic glittering, dimensional quality. The decoration has not been flattened by over-polishing: the cuts are crisp and well-defined throughout.
The bangle is hinged on a knuckle hinge and closes on a box-and-tongue clasp with an original safety chain fitted at the clasp end, attached at both terminals — a period-correct guard against loss if the clasp were to open. Safety chain intact is a notable condition point on a Victorian-revival bangle of this period.
Charles Horner Ltd of Halifax was one of the foremost British silver jewellery manufacturers of the late 19th through mid-20th centuries, known for quality silver accessories, hatpins, and jewellery produced to consistent high standards. The Chester assay office — which closed in 1962 — was the principal hallmarking authority for much of the northern English silver trade; a 1955 Chester-marked piece is a late and collectable Chester issue. The coronation mark adds a further layer of documentary interest.
