Vintage Spanish Toledo Damascene Wide Hinged Bangle Bracelet, Gold Inlay Arabesque Acanthus and Floral Scrollwork on Black Ground, Safety Chain, Unmarked
Description
Gold hammered into black. A craft older than the city that made it.
Toledo damascene is one of the oldest decorative metalworking traditions in Europe: fine gold wire or gold foil hammer-inlaid into a crosshatched black oxidised steel or iron ground, fused by pressure into a surface that will not lift, flake, or fade. This is not printed, painted, or plated decoration. The gold is in the metal. This bangle is a fine example of the Toledo craft at its best: the entire outer face covered in a continuous flowing arabesque of acanthus leaves, scrolling vines, carnation-form flowers, and four-petalled rosette motifs, all in warm gold on a deep even black ground. The edges of each gold element are crisp and precise; the pattern is symmetrical and unbroken around the full circumference of the bangle. This is quality Toledo work.
The form is a wide hinged bangle, broader than average, the band tapering slightly at the sides. The interior is plain polished gold-tone. The hinge is a clean double-hinge construction; the clasp is a box or push-tab mechanism with a gold-tone safety chain running between both halves, both hooks intact and functional. Unmarked.
