Description

Birmingham, 1921. W.J. Myatt & Co. MC, clearly.

Some monograms require patience and a good eye. This is not one of them. The MC cut into the oval cartouche on the front face is as legible as a calling card: a bold flowing M with sweeping diagonal strokes, a generous C curling around it, both letters worked together in confident interlaced script within a clean double-line oval border. Whoever MC was, they knew exactly what they wanted and the engraver delivered it without hesitation.

The rest of the case matches that directness. All-over fine vertical line engine-turning covers both faces completely, tight and even, wrapping around the curved edges of the case with the kind of precision that only a well-set machine and a good operator can achieve. The engine-turning runs right to the cartouche border on all sides, the contrast between the linear ground and the fluid engraved monogram doing exactly what it should. The form is squared with rounded corners, substantial in the hand, with a suspension ring at the top corner for chain attachment.

Made by W.J. Myatt & Co of Birmingham, fully hallmarked: maker's mark WJM & Co, Birmingham anchor, date letter W for 1921, lion passant for sterling silver.
