Description

Red bloom against black enamel.

A bold red camellia sits against a deep black enamel ground on the lid of this Stratton powder compact, its petals rendered in the confident hand-painted style characteristic of the finest mid-century vanity pieces. Green and grey leaves frame the bloom, with gilt Art Nouveau scroll detail rising from the base of the stem. Dark ground, bright flower: the contrast is deliberate and striking at compact scale.

The reverse is gold-tone with an all-over engine-turned lozenge crosshatch, the Stratton back in its most recognisable form, with the Stratton maker's mark to the centre. Inside, a full circular mirror and clean white powder well. The compact comes with a new puff and new sifter, suggesting it was gifted or stored rather than regularly carried: exterior age wear is present, but the interior has the character of a piece that was treasured and set aside rather than used daily.

Comes complete with its original Stratton case and slip.
