Antique Edwardian Sterling Silver Fob Medal Pendant Necklace, Pierced Scrollwork Cartouche, Script Monogram, Birmingham Hallmarked 1906, 925 Stamped Chain
Description
Birmingham. 1906. Every mark in place.
This is a fully hallmarked Edwardian sterling silver fob medal pendant, the kind of piece that was made to be worn, inherited, and worn again. The form is the classic fob cartouche: a large shaped pendant with an ornate pierced and chased outer border of acanthus scrollwork and foliate decoration surrounding a raised shield-form central cartouche. The border is worked with considerable detail, the scrollwork pierced through so that light passes through the openwork, the raised foliate elements carrying deep oxidised patina in their recesses against bright silver on the high points. This is not cast decoration, it is worked silver.
The front face carries a script monogram engraved into the polished central cartouche in flowing Edwardian script, the initials of the original owner cut cleanly into the reserved ground. The reverse is plain polished silver, and it is there that the hallmarks are struck in a row: the Birmingham Assay Office anchor town mark, the date letter for 1906, and the maker's mark, a complete Edwardian hallmark sequence confirming solid sterling silver, British assay, and precise year of manufacture. This piece is 120 years old and fully documented by its marks.
The chain is a fine cable or trace chain with a spring ring clasp stamped 925 in a rectangular cartouche, confirming sterling silver throughout.
