kabyle-silver-and-coral-container
Antique Middle Eastern Silver and Red Coral Repousse Canister with Lid, Acanthus and Floral Relief, Late 19th to Early 20th Century

Some objects were made to hold things worth protecting. This is one of them.

This is an antique silver canister with its original fitted lid, originating from the Middle Eastern silversmithing tradition and dating to the late 19th or early 20th century. Every surface, the cylindrical body, the low walls of the lid, the rim bands, has been worked in high-relief repousse and chasing: acanthus leaves, five-petal blossoms, and scrolled tendrils hammered from the reverse until they rise from the silver in dense, layered relief. Deep oxidation settles in the recesses, throwing the polished high points into sharp contrast.

The lid is centred on a fluted rosette, reminiscent of a scallop shell or sunburst dome, encircled by a wreath of scrolling vines. Throughout the body and lid, red coral cabochons are bezel-set at intervals among the foliage. In Middle Eastern silversmithing tradition, Mediterranean red coral was paired with worked silver not only for its visual richness but for its protective properties: coral was believed to ward off the evil eye and guard whatever was kept within.

The interior is plain polished silver, unlined, a clean open cup. Likely used on a vanity or writing table as a ring or trinket reliquary, a pill or salve container, or a small spice caddy.

No hallmarks are present, consistent with regional workshop production of the period. The piece is in excellent antique condition with no damage, no missing coral, and a beautiful aged patina throughout.

The Particulars:

Origin: Middle Eastern, likely late 19th to early 20th century

Material: Silver-tone metal with red coral cabochon accents

Technique: High-relief repousse and chasing with deep oxidation finish

Design: Cylindrical canister with fitted slip-cap lid, acanthus, floral and scroll motifs, bezel-set red coral throughout

Lid: Central fluted rosette surrounded by scrolling vine wreath with coral accents

Markings: No hallmarks, consistent with regional workshop production

The Curation: Cabinet of Curiosities, vanity or writing table object

Condition: Excellent antique condition.
