Vintage EMU Brand Standphast Goldoid Powder Compact, Concentric Engine-Turned Domed Circular Case, Shell Boss Centre, Full Mirror, Original Puff, Made in England, Mid-Century
Description
Not Stratton. Not Kigu. Rarer than both.
The EMU Brand is not a name that comes up often, and that is precisely what makes this compact worth noticing. A smaller British manufacturer working in the mid-century golden age of vanity compacts, EMU produced pieces under the Standphast Goldoid finish: a proprietary thick gold-tone plating above standard gilt, the Goldoid name stamped alongside the EMU bird trademark hexagonal logo and Made in England to the interior base. This is a documented British compact with a named finish and a verifiable maker, just not one that every collector has already found.
The form is a large domed circular compact, the kind of scale that sits properly in the hand rather than disappearing into a pocket. The entire exterior face is covered in concentric circle engine-turning, tight parallel rings radiating outward from a raised central boss carrying a shell or fan motif at the centre. The rings catch light differently at every angle as the compact moves, the warm Goldoid tone giving the whole surface a depth that flat-finished compacts simply do not have. The domed profile amplifies this: the rings curve over the crown of the lid, the geometry of the turning following the form.
The interior carries a full-width mirror in the lid and retains the original powder puff in the base, worn and frayed at the edges with age but present. The hinge is intact and functional.
