There are compacts, and then there are objects that happen to hold powder.

This is the second kind. The lid of this Elizabeth Arden compact is a field of gold: an all-over embossed design of densely packed daisies and floral motifs, each one pressed into the warm gold-tone metal with the kind of detail that rewards close attention. Scattered across the surface at irregular intervals, five deep garnet-red cabochon stones sit flush in their settings like full stops in a sentence you want to read slowly. The overall effect is somewhere between a medieval reliquary and a very well-dressed vanity table, which is to say: exactly where it belongs in the Vault.

Stamped MADE IN SWITZERLAND on the hinge, which is a provenance worth noting. Swiss manufacture in the mid-century compact world meant precision engineering and materials held to a higher standard, and this piece carries that quality in its weight, its hinge action, and the clean, uncluttered interior: a full mirror on one side, a powder well on the other, both in excellent condition.

Used, but worn with care. The slip is present. No puff, no original box, but this compact was never really about the packaging.
