Description

Heavy as a paperweight. Clear as the day it was made. The lid still closes with authority.

A Victorian brass-lidded desk inkwell: a square-section body in lead crystal or heavy cut glass, water-clear and notably weighty, with a domed brass lid on a hinged mount fitted to a brass collar at the neck. This is a proper writing desk object — the kind that occupied a fixed position on a leather-topped writing slope or within a brass ink stand, used daily and built to last.

The crystal body is square in section with a broad flat base, the glass of exceptional clarity with that characteristic brilliance and density of lead crystal. The interior well is deep and cylindrical. The brass collar is fitted precisely to the neck, the circular opening framed cleanly. The lid is a smooth dome form in aged brass, darkened to a warm brown-gold patina with age and handling. The lid interior carries a dark composition or rubber liner, original to the piece, which sealed the ink against evaporation. The hinge is fitted to the back of the collar and operates cleanly; the lid closes firmly and sits flush.

No maker's marks identified. The form, materials, and construction are consistent with English Victorian desk accessory production, c.1870-1900.
