Antique Vulcanite Vesta Case, Feu Inscription, French Attribution, Ornate Scrollwork Match Holder
Description
A little keeper of fire, dressed in dark scrolls and a single telling word.
This antique vulcanite vesta case bears the inscription “Feu”, French for “fire”, within a richly ornamented panel. Curling flourishes, fan-shaped corner motifs, and beaded borders frame the lettering. The opposite face centres on a small circular medallion among matching scrollwork, giving both sides the attention usually reserved for far grander possessions.
Its deep brown-black rectangular body has softly rounded ends and a finely ribbed side panel. Identified as vulcanite by the seller and attributed to France in the existing research, it is offered without a precise date or maker attribution. The French inscription is a particularly fitting detail for a pocket match holder, though it does not by itself establish where the case was made.
