Description

Three goddesses. One shell. The carver who did this was not showing off. They simply knew what they were doing.

The Three Graces, Aglaea, Euphrosyne, and Thalia, the goddesses of charm, beauty, and joy, have been one of the great subjects of Western art since antiquity. Raphael painted them. Canova sculpted them. The cameo carvers of Torre del Greco, the Neapolitan town that produced the finest shell cameos in the world across the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, carved them thousands of times. The best versions of those carvings are not repetition: they are demonstrations of what the medium can do at its limits.

This is one of those demonstrations. The three figures are intertwined in the classical composition, their bodies turning and overlapping in a way that requires the carver to work in three dimensions rather than simply cutting back a surface. The drapery is fluid and deeply undercut, the individual faces and forms clearly differentiated, the composition balanced across the full width of the shell. The ground is a warm amber-coral carnelian conch, the white relief layer carved to a depth that lesser cameos never attempt. The carving is in excellent condition throughout, with no chips or losses.

The frame is 800-grade silver, stamped on the edge, set with a border of small faceted marcasite stones and finished with a scalloped outer edge. A period pin back with an attached safety chain. The silver and marcasite combination with the scalloped frame is consistent with Italian production of the late Victorian to Art Deco period.
