Description

Continental silver. Hand-engraved. The panel catches the light like it always did.

An antique continental silver snuff box: a shaped-rectangular form with canted corners, the body and base crafted in 800 standard silver, the lid set with a large tortoiseshell-effect resin panel in deep amber-brown with characteristic dark mottled inclusions. The panel is flush-set into a plain silver bezel, the colour rich and warm, the mottling organic in appearance. The exterior walls and base are decorated with hand-engraved foliate motifs: fine leaf and stem forms running around the full perimeter band, with a serrated border at the lid join. The engraving is crisp and well-executed throughout. The hinge is a full-length barrel construction running the full width of the back edge, a quality fitting appropriate to the period. The box opens cleanly and closes with a firm snap.

The 800 silver standard is the continental European silver standard, widely used in Germany, Austria, Italy, and surrounding regions during the 19th and early 20th centuries, confirming 80% fine silver content. A second mark is present alongside the 800 stamp and is currently being researched for full identification. This listing will be updated with the maker attribution once confirmed.
