Description

Birmingham silver, 1966. Every cut made by hand, every one still sharp.

A hallmarked sterling silver hinged bangle bracelet, fully assayed at Birmingham in 1966, decorated across the outer face in bright-cut engraving: repeating sprays of fern frond or feathered palm motifs, clusters of fine radiating cuts forming leaf forms that run symmetrically around the full circumference of the bangle. Bright-cut engraving is a hand-engraving technique in which the tool cuts at an angle into the silver, leaving a faceted groove that catches and reflects light differently from the surrounding surface. The result is that characteristic shimmer-against-matte quality: the cuts vivid and almost luminous against the softer silver ground. The execution here is confident, well-spaced, and in excellent preservation.

The form is a wide hinged bangle, the body curving and tapering slightly toward the hinge points. The hinge is a neat barrel-pin construction; the clasp is a push-tab box mechanism with a safety tab. The interior is plain polished silver with the full hallmark suite struck clearly to the inner rim: maker's mark ELD, lion passant, Birmingham anchor, and date letter R for 1966.
